What one study found about foam and oil
A 2020 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology tested water, a foaming cleanser and a cleansing oil on 20 volunteers, measuring sunscreen residue with VISIA facial imaging.[1] With a waterproof sunscreen, water left 59.3% of the product on the skin, the foaming cleanser 36.8% and the cleansing oil 5.8%. The untreated baseline was 3.2%, and the oil result was not significantly different from it.[1]
With a non-waterproof sunscreen the gap closed: 15.6% for the foam and 13.4% for the oil, with neither significantly different from baseline.[1] Eight of the 20 participants reported dry skin after the foaming cleanser, against one after the oil.[1]
